Home Improvements

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Forum Updates 03 December 2010 · 261 views

The move-in process continues.  I spent most of the evening getting emoticons uploaded and activated.  Now when you post, you'll see taksan more emotes to chose from.  Still have a few faves that didn't make it but they're coming.  Didn't think it'd be that much of a PITA to get emotes done.  I love Invision Power Board software but emote management is the one area I've found that could use some sprucing up.

Currently working on getting the Gallery and Downloads sections set up.  These can be powerful features to the site.  I'm soliciting ideas on how these sections can be most effectively used so if you have any inspiration, please share the love.

I Blinked and Missed the Server Migration!

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Forum Updates 30 November 2010 · 352 views

That had to be the most seamless server migration I ever didn't participate in!  Been having stability problems with the server that hosted this forum (RE: my last post) and complained to my host who are the same people that wrote this forum software: Invision Power Board.  Yeah, I figured have the forum hosted by folks who would know the optimum server configuration to run their software.

While that may in fact be true, the reality in my case was a bit different.  Another site on the server kept getting slammed with denial of service attacks which would cause this site to hang and not load in the browser.

So, after a firmly but nicely worded complaint, they told me they would move Appliantology.org to a different server.  I was expecting to be posting updates on Twitter but it was done so quickly that I never had a chance to.  An utterly painless and seamless server migration.  Them dudes at Invision Power Board are good!

Anyway, we're on a different server now so hopefully the nuisance downtime is history.

More Downtime Today

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Forum Updates 30 November 2010 · 296 views

Yet more downtime today on the server that runs this site.  That makes the 8th time this week alone for over an hour and half of downtime.  My host tells me that the server running my site has been the victim of several denial of service attacks.  Must be another site on this server that draws all the hostiles like flies to a turd.  Well, that turd is stinking me out!

My host has offered to move me to another server which I eagerly accepted.  The move will happen sometime in the next 24 hours, they estimate about 15 minutes of downtime.  I'll do updates during the migration on Twitter:  @FixitnowSamurai.

Now Facebook integration

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Forum Updates 29 November 2010 · 260 views

Just like with Twitter integration where you can sign in with Twitter, now you can do the same thing with Facebook.  Just makin' it all kinda easy to get into The School and learn how to git stuff fixed!

Added the Twitter Connect capability to the forum.  Now new users can skip the registration rigamarole and just sign right in with their Twitter login on.  They're automatically Grasshoppers and can ask questions in the Kitchen and Laundry forums.  You can see it on the forum sign in page==> http://appliantology...l&section=login

Note that if you're already logged in, you won't see it.
