Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Refrigerator Repair 23 June 2011 · 6,727 views

Now, for the first time ever in the Universe, Sublime Master of Appliantology Certified Tech Group 51 reveals his patented technique.

How to fix a Maytag bottom-mount refrigerator that's freezing food in the beer compartment

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Refrigerator Repair 20 June 2011 · 1,854 views

Symptom - fridge section too cold, food freezes and unable to adjust temperature to warmer temperature

Cause - small spring within damper control unit disconnected causing damper flap to be open all the time, causing too much cold air to flowninto from freezer section into fridge section.

Fix - reconnected small spring that holds the damper flap up within damper control unit (Maytag Part No. 67001041 Control, Damper).

Tips
1. obtain copy of service manual for 19, 20 and 22 cubic foot bottom-mount Amana and Maytag refrigerators, which shows disassembly procedure;
2. obtain copy of part schematic for Maytag PBB1951GRB;
3. remove all top shelf from inside fridge for adequate working room and unplug the fridge (to prevent electrical shock);
4. take your time removing the light shield, damper control cover, foam insert, belt tensioner, belt and knob, and damper control unit and don't force anything;
5. mark the belt and cog on top of the damper control unit for alignment before taking them off;
6. when removing damper control unit, take care not to drop or lose that little spring;
7. reset freezer and refrigerator temperature settings back to 4 each;
8. after reassembly and plugging the refrigerator back in, allow a few hours before adjusting temperature control settings up/down one setting at each adjustment until desired temperatures reached;
9. use a fridge thermometer in both freezer and refrigerator sections to check temperature levels while adjusting.

How to troubleshoot and repair defrost system problems in a Hotpoint (GE) refrigerator

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Refrigerator Repair 18 June 2011 · 1,787 views

There's no "setting " of the defrost timer, it keeps its own time.

Your unit is comprised of a 3 component defrost system
including the timer, bi-metal, and a heater.

If you have excessive frost build up on the evaporator
coils or it's clogged completely then yes you have a defrost
problem.

now all you have to do it figure out which of the components you need.

the defrost timer is located in the control housing inside of the
refrigerator section and yes there is a hole there to advance the timer for testing.

Item # 646 on diagram below

if your coils are still clogged all you have to do is slowly advance the timer
clockwise with a screw driver "click by click" and when you reach the defrost mode you will
hear the compressor and freezer fan shut off.

When in defrost mode if the heater thats around the evaporator coils
imediately comes on the you have a bad timer. the heater can be checked by
touch "be careful" or with an amp meter.

If the heater is not getting hot then you either have a bad bi-metal
or a bad heater. the heater can simply be OHM'd out for continuity
and so can the bi-metal (as long as it's still covered with ice/frost)
If it's not you can submerge it into a glass of ice water for a few minutes.

does this unit have "power freeze" and "power cool" buttons ? If so, press them both for 5 seconds and see if the computer resets and the compressor comes on.
