Using an Airflow Meter to Check Your Dryer Vent for Safety and Efficiency

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Appliance Repair Service, Repair Videos, Dryer Repair 20 February 2013 · 3,318 views
dryer, vent, back pressure and 4 more...
In this journey into appliance repair enlightenment, Samurai Appliance Repair Man shows you how to use an airflow meter to analytically test the back pressure on a dryer vent for safety and efficiency. Looks can be deceiving, as this video shows, and even a short simple dryer vent that appears to be ideal can have airflow problems. So it's always wise to use a meter to actually measure the back pressure.

Here's the air flow tester I used in the video ==> http://www.repaircli...0106710/1447456

Money-Saving Tip for Replacing a Motor in a GE Dryer

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Dryer Repair 22 December 2012 · 654 views
GE, frigidaire, dryer, motor
Some models of GE dryers are actually made my Frigidaire... or they at least use Frigidaire parts. One example is the GE DSXH43EA3WW dryer. If you have one of these with a bad motor, here's a tip that could save you a couple of of Benjamins: use the Frigidaire part number instead of the GE part. Grand Master Reginald explains:

...The new G.E. motor is only 376.85 clams. :woot: ............ ...Or, If yer crafty, only 115 clams  for a Frigidaire motor...

Remove the Belt and try turning the Motor Shaft by hand.
Does it turn easily, smoothly ?
Give the Motor Shaft a twirl by hand.
Does it continue to spin at all ?

Fixing a Loud Noise in a Bosch Dryer

Bosch, WFMC, dryer
Finding the source of this noise in this Bosch dryer was tricky. Judging by the sound, the noise had to originate from either the motor or the blower wheel. The problem turned out to be the blower wheel. The noise was only heard in a heated dryer cycle. Apparently the heated air would deform the plastic blower wheel just enough to make it contact the blower housing while rotating.

Here are the part links to the drum rollers and blower wheel that I used to fix this dryer:

Maytag Neptune Dryer with a Split Drum

Maytag, Neptune, dryer, drum and 1 more...
Customer called with a complaint that her 7-year old Maytag Neptune MDE9700AYW dryer would hum when started then click off. Also said the drum would not turn by hand. What could the problem be? The answer may surprise you!

Epilogue: Turns out this is not covered under warranty. The failure occurred right at the seam where the drum was welded together. Total fee to replace this drum, part and labor, is over $400. I recommended that the customer purchase a new Whirlpool dryer with a lint filter on the top panel and no electronic controls, just knobs and switches, available at Sears for less than $500. She's going to go that route.
