Fixing a Loud Noise in a Bosch Dryer

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Dryer Repair, Repair Videos 19 June 2012 · 391 views
Bosch, WFMC, dryer
Finding the source of this noise in this Bosch dryer was tricky. Judging by the sound, the noise had to originate from either the motor or the blower wheel. The problem turned out to be the blower wheel. The noise was only heard in a heated dryer cycle. Apparently the heated air would deform the plastic blower wheel just enough to make it contact the blower housing while rotating.

Here are the part links to the drum rollers and blower wheel that I used to fix this dryer:

Maytag Neptune Dryer with a Split Drum

Customer called with a complaint that her 7-year old Maytag Neptune MDE9700AYW dryer would hum when started then click off. Also said the drum would not turn by hand. What could the problem be? The answer may surprise you!

Epilogue: Turns out this is not covered under warranty. The failure occurred right at the seam where the drum was welded together. Total fee to replace this drum, part and labor, is over $400. I recommended that the customer purchase a new Whirlpool dryer with a lint filter on the top panel and no electronic controls, just knobs and switches, available at Sears for less than $500. She's going to go that route.

Hunting down a mystery leak in an LG steam dryer

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Dryer Repair 04 May 2012 · 546 views
LG, dryer, steam, leak

<<<DLEX7177RM Steam dryer has mystery leak that the customer notices after most cycles, coming from near the front center of the machine. I ran this unit for quite some time and could find no leak.>>>

********************************

In most cases---this is caused by a partially restricted vent system.

When the back pressure increases due to a restricted/partially blocked vent system---moisture/steam "escapes" from the drum during the cycle (fairly common).

Check all hoses for tight connections as well (it's rare to find a leaky hose).

*********************************

<<<I could not locate the source of the leak. I went into dx mode and activated the steam generator, and only ended up with a drum full of water>>>

*********************************

To initiate the DIAGNOSTICS TEST MODE...

Press/hold the MORE TIME and LESS TIME buttons

Then press the POWER button and release all three buttons.

To test the STEAM GENERATOR funtion...

Press the START/PAUSE button 4 times.

NOTE: During the STEAM GENERATOR test mode---the SG pump *will flood* the dryer if allowed to run too long.

**********************************

<<<Customer indicated that a previous servicer replaced something (maybe steam generator?) and indicated that this part breaks all the time and they should get used to replacing it.>>>

**********************************

False.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The STEAM GENERATOR in an LG dryer serves 2 functions...

1) Static Reduction---Most of the dry cycles will add a small spray of steam into the drum during *the last* 15 minutes of a cycle.

2)The EASY IRON cycle adds a *heavy* amount of steam to the laundry load to leave clothes very damp in preparation for *ironing*.

If STEAM DRY is selected (any cycle)---the STEAM GENERATOR will be turned off during the last 8 minutes of the cycle.

If using the STEAM FRESH option---the SG will NOT energize if the Moisture Sensor Bars detect moisure in the load (clothing).

Things to check in an LG dryer that's not drying the clothes completely

Posted by Samurai Appliance Repair Man, in Dryer Repair 02 May 2012 · 617 views
LG, dryer

<<<I'm working on repairing a LG dryer DLE5977B that is not drying the clothes completely.>>>

***************

Assuming the entire vent system is clean/clear...

If Fabric Softener Sheets are used in the dryer---laundry will be approximately 90% dry (on a regular basis).

This is caused by *wax* build-up on the MOISTURE SENSORS from the FS Sheet.

The waxy residue on the MOISTURE SENSORS will cause the MAIN BOARD to "think" that the laundry has become dry at/near the end of the cycle.

There are 2 options:

1) Discontinue using FS Sheets

or

2) Clean/scrub the MOISTURE SENSORS with a *ScotchBrite Pad* after each load in the dryer (when a FS Sheet is used)

The MOISTURE SENSORS are located on the *drum side* of the Lint Filter Housing (2 silver metal strips).
These can easily be found on the Lint Filter Housing by placing your head into the drum and looking downward at the Filter Housing.

Additionally...

If a *small* load has been placed in the dryer---the damp/wet laundry may not be making contact with the Moisture Sensors often enough (causing rapid termination of the cycle).
Raising the rear/back leveling legs of the dryer---about an inch higher than the front of the dryer---will cause small loads of laundry to tumble at the front of the drum (continually making contact with the Sensors).
