Maytag MAV5000 AWW washer ground to a halt......

She indicated that she heard "metal on metal" grinding during the spin cycle which gradually got worse, and, now the machine will not spin at all. Pump works though.
I suspect, without the benefit of looking at it first, that perhaps the spindle seal has leaked causing the transmission to fail.:?
My question is this: What is the appropriate troubleshooting steps for this model?
Are there diagrams showing the structure of the machine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hopefully I have the same problem because the fix looks very easy.
Thanks again, if it works, I will gladly donate to the brewsky fund!

One point of clarification for me.
The referenced thread was for model MAV7257AWW, does this model have the same internal drive workings as model MAV5000AWW?

Problem with washer not spinning was solved by adding nylon washers next to cam thus allowing cam to raise higher and disengage the brake.
Many thanks to this site for advice and avoiding a costly service call.
I have donated to the beer fund accordingly.

My Maytag is having a problem simular to what you discribe. Grinding sound during spin cycle.
From what I have seen from your adventrue, it sounds like you fixed this problem by adding a nylon washer next to the cam to raise it higher? Do you think this might fix the grinding sound?
Any details you could provide, would be great. I am looking at the diagrams and having hard time understanding where this washer is added.

Nylon washer was a temporary fix. This last weekend I bought a Cam rebuild kit which included a new cam, spindle, thrust bearing and washers. The kit is readily available for $25-$30.
It took me about 15 minutes to install and it worked flawlessly. The kit comes with installation instructions that shows you how to adjust the brake.
It looks like Maytag redesigned the entire thrust bearing and washer setup.

Purchased the kit mentioned and I actually do not have enough room on the drive shaft to put on even one of the washers. Part I bought is part number LA-2007. Any ideas on what could be the issue with installing this?

After you have removed all of your old parts and followed the instructions that should have came with that kit everything should work correctly.

Also, you may need to have somebody push the agitator towards the bottom of the machine to free up space for the clip.
