Montgomery Ward Fridge temp unstable

6 posts in this topic

I have an old Montgomery Ward side-by-side fridge and the temp in the fridge is unstable.  It will work fine for a while then warm up to room temp for a few days then chill down again.  The freezer seems to be ok, only the fridge temp varies.  I want to see if there is a simple repair before I fork out $1k on a new unit.  I'm hoping I may be able to repair this ancient beast by replacing something simple. :?

This is odd since the food compartment gets its cold air from the freezer, something seems to be blocking the air to the food compartment,   Make sure the fan in the freezer is working ok, and there is nothing blocking the air vent into the food side or the return air vent at the bottom to the freezer, you might have some styrafoam floating in the air vent from the freezer blocking this air.  Take a look at this air vent and see what might be loose in there.

Thanks Pegi.  I took everything out and to make sure the holes were clear.  They were clear although the lower ones are very close to the crisper drawers.  Maybe the fan is shutting down occasionally, I'll watch for this.  I'll also experiment with the temp settings because they don't work the way I would have guessed.  The freezer temp setting is simply rotates a plate that opens or closes the vent between the freezer and the fridge.  The fridge temp setting has some electronics so I'll guess that this is what sets the overall temp for the whole unit.

Again, thanks.

Thanks, set both half way and see what happens,  If you set the freezer control to colder, this shuts off the air fow to the food side, people do not know how these work. Warmer freezer lets more air flow into the food side, perhaps someone has been turning this control???

Ok, I think I jumped the gun a bit assuming that it was fixed.  Yes, this did help and it worked for a while but now it's warming up again.  I noticed that the fan works fine but I think there is a problem with the temp sensing system because there is no cooling.  I think it looked like only the fridge was warming up because the freezer side seems to hold it's temp better.

I notice that there is a slight click when the temp control is triggered somehow but this isn't always happening.  Is there some type of sensor that goes out or something similar?

See if you have a defrost problem in the freezer, check to see of there is an ice build up on the evap. coil behind the freezer wall inside of the freezer side, this ice would block the cold air to the food compartment.
