What is there to service on a gas fireplace that is any different from a gas furnace? Orifices, burners, valve, fan, ....... Anything special to look for?

You covered the bases. It really depends on the burner set up. Some of the burners are covered with sand, rock, rock wool or vermiculite for the ember effect.

The type where the burner is under the log set is usually like any other burner although typically there is some soot build up on the log set due to flame impingement. If you remove the logs note the position of them before moving to be sure they are in the correct position when you replace them, they are designed to be placed in a specific order for proper combustion & appearance.

Pilot types could be normal thermocouple or powerpile type system if it has on/off switches - both need a clean pilot.

If it is a vented set inspect the chimney, damper and air intake if applicable.

If the pilot ODS chamber gets a little dust in it then the flame will shut down after 4 or 5 minutes....Shoot a little rustbuster into the pilot to flush out the little critters that get in there over the summer months.
