Weird Sound Card Problem

I've had this Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5+1 sound card for several years and no problems until recently. It has this convenient connection port that fits into a drive bay, providing all connections on the front of the computer for easy access. That's where I plug my guitar directly into the mic 2 in jack.
Recently it stopped working. No input from that port to my speakers. The weird part is that I can record to an application (Sound Forge) through that jack, but can't seem to pass the sound directly to the speakers. All other sources get to the speakers just fine.
Also weird is that it used to work fine, then stopped, then started again when I restored my drive, then stopped again, then started again after a reboot, then stopped again. One of those @&%$ing intermittent problems that are so hard to solve.
Of course I checked all the mixer settings, reinatalled the software and drivers, and all the usual easy stuff. But it still won't stay working.
I read on another forum that Creative Labs is aware of this problem but has no answer. CL says nothing about it in their FAQs or Knowlege Base. No help anywhere else on this issue.
Any insights here? Software? Hardware? Or am I missing something obvious?

Have you tried lower input signal? Maybe you are overdriving the preamp.

I managed to get an identical spare card from my bro, swapped out the parts, and determined it was indeed a software problem. After uninstalling all the software and drivers, and then reinstalling, problem solved! Thanks for your suggestion, but the mic input has a pretty high impedance. Level was not a problem.
