Frigidaire washer wont agitate:

Frigidaire washer model number:fwx833as1

 

I have this washer with a  no agitate problem. I do smell a burning smell with a motor hum that is followed by a click near the motor. The hum stops. The click is heard again. I'm assuming it's a thermo protection switch of some sort resetting.

I did try to jumper the lid switch with the same results-still no agitate.

I have the wiring diagram for the model, but can't really read it the way they have it set up. I have a meter and have used it to fix my dryer (thanks to you in the past).

I can manually turn the dial and have the washer cycle through all settings including the spin cycle.

What am I looking for?? Timer switch, capacitor, transmission, motor?????

Where do you turn the dial to have the machine resume normal operation? Anywhere or is there a specific place? And will the machine run normally on any cycle?

Other things to check:

- all pulleys turn freely with the belt removed ( motor, pump (unless direct connected to the motor) and transmission)

- motor spins with belt removed and power applied.

When I turn the dial to any cycle where the machine isn't supposed to be in agaitate, it works fine.

When the timer calls for the agaitate cycle, it doesn't agitate, something heats up and triggers the thermal switch too shut it down. If I wait for that switch to reset, I can then manually turn the dial to slelct other functions. Obviously if I don't wait for that switch to reset, nothing happens.

I recently replaced the belt, all 3 of the pulleys were turning freely at that time. The main, tension and motor pulley. Probably 3 weeks ago.

It could be the contacts in the timer, since it reverses the motor (start) windings during spin / agitate.

If you could check the voltages at the motor:

start windings during the start of agitate (orange & purple),

and then at the run windings (red & black/red)

The results should be the same in the spin cycle, but the start windings are out of phase with the run windings at that time, but you're meter won't show that.

red and red/black- 130 (quick burst), then drops to 115

you said the pulleys turned freely 3 weeks ago, but what about now?

remove the belt and fill the tub with water them try agitate, you may have a broken gear in the transmission, i busted trans can still spin

orange/purple is at the start of agaitate (motor humming-no movement)

red-red/black is at the start of a spin cycle

 

I'll remove the belt and see what happens when I try to agitate.

 

  EDIT---Just redid the measuremnets:

Belt off:

agitate:

orange/purple=130-120V

red  red/black=24mV

spin: same as agitate measurments.

Motor works fine with the belt off, so I'll assume the tranny is locking in agaitate and I'll have to replace that. I should have been able to figure that out by myself, thanks for the smack in the head.

Is my assumption correct? Should I be looking at other meter readings while the machine is trying to agitate?

Alhtough the tranny is half the price of a new cheap machine, hmmmm. Off I go to price shop!

EDIT #2:

besides the tranny, what else should be replaced "while I'm in there"?

EDIT #3: The lid lock switch doesn't seem to be locking the lid all of the time. Would that interupt the agitate cycle? white- white/red wiring Note: I did jumper these yesterday and it still didn't agitate.

Those trannys are easy to repair. Most likely it's a broken idler gear. just clean it out good. Use Maytag gear oil to replace

I was going to take it apart and see how it worked, but then I had second thoughts if it was the culprit.

If it is the culprit, where would I get tranny parts, for example the idler that you wrote?  Repair clinic, which I've used, only lists the whole assembly.

We used to do those all the time. i got so I had several gearsets in stock. Get me a model # and I'll see what I can do

This is the ITEM number from repairclinic: 1191055

I'll see if I can find a part number on the tranny housing in a few.

So you think it's the transmission causing my troubles?

it definitely appears that way. It's easy enough to check - the bottom shaft should freely turn in one direction and lock in the other

depending on machine age some of the friggy washers had 10 year warranty on the transmission

Part number from tranny case:

131878400 build date 10/25/02

The bottom shaft (whole assembly actually) only turns in one direction and lock in the other direction.

 

I guess now I need alittle education on how the machine actually agitates. Does it always just move in one direction, pausing to stir up the clothes? Or should the agitator move back and forth to stir up the clothes? If it's supposed to move back and forth, is the tranny supposed to unlock at some point? I don't know how the damn machine is supposed to work, so I can't visualize what's supposed to happen.

Is there an online picutre of how this tranny is put together, just so I can see how the guts look?

New concern after using the search function:

Did I route the damn belt properly?

It looks like the belts "V" should be riding in the idler pulley. Correct? I really didn't see any other way to route it and the flat side on the idler pulley didn't seem right.

I think I have to take this whole damn machine apart to see how it actually works, or is supposed to work.

Although the machine did work for a couple weeks with the belt installed. ????

 

Getting closer to an end:

I just let the machine run through it's cycles with the belt off. The motor turns counter clockwise in agitate cycle. Which as the tranny doesn't move in that direction, is why the motor was only humming with the belt attached. It drains and then the motor spins counter clockwise, which is the way the tranny moves freely. So the tranny is in fact locked up for the agiate cycle, causing my troubles.

Seeing as though I can't remember where I bought this machine and I'm sure I don't have the receipt (although I will look for it), can the tranny be swapped under warranty? If so, how can I do that? Who do I contact, where do I send it?

If I can't, is it cheaper to rebuild it? Keeping in mind the tranny from repairclinic is $140.

Son of *****, I'm so close to getting this fixed. I think.

I removed the tranny and took it apart. Two problems. The bar that connects the "partial" circle gear was broken in half and the part of that gear that rides on the bars pin was also broken.

Gear oil was really black.

Looks like I'm buying a new tranny.
