Tankless water heater

I really want a tankless water heater. I was quoted $3k to put one in!! that is a lot of money.

I was told that the gas line needs to be upgraded from .5 inch to .75 and the exhaust needs to be stainless steel. I understand this but if I can move the waterheater to the attic the exhaust will not cost as much because it is closer to teh roof. Copper is cheaper than stainless steel, so I will move the water lines up and save on exhaust line down. The gas line is already up there.

 I can mount the heater myself and run exhaust and water but I will pay a plumber for the gas part. Would I save money if I moved the waterheater to the attic?

Does it need to be vented to the roof ?

Can the water heater be vented straight out and terminated on the sidewall in your locality ?

You don't have .75 gas near the location you want ?

The attic is the closest place ?

I don't know the layout of your house (2 story, ect) and gas meter location entrance, ect...

We has a direct vent gas fireplace (Wis.) put in our first floor family room and it needed .75, but because of the length,  they installed a total of 50' of 1" pipe from the basement and around the room on the outside (near ground level) on the small ledge that was part of the house.

The input/output vent went straight out the wall and terminated there.

It is a one-level house. The current water heater is dead-center in the middle wall to the kitchen. I would say it is the same distance to the nearest outside wall as it is to the roof. I wil take a picture and post it.

When we had our centrally located roof vented water heater replaced with a direct vent tank-type near an exterior wall,  they capped off the existing water pipe stubs, and tapped the new water heater into the nearby H & C water pipes (only about 25' from the old location). Depending on the pipe location, water flow, ect...
