I was removing the back panel of the dryer with the machine still plugged into the outlet(shame on me).  Some sparks went off near the back panel of the dryer.  Did I blow a fuse or burn a wire?

More than likely you just tripped the circuit breaker at your house distribution panel.  And probably make a nice arc scorch on the back panel.
