maytag gdg810 gas dryer bought in 1980

a week ago, the dryer motor seemed to chatter before starting and running normally after pushing the "START" button. now it just chatters and does not start.

is it most likely the motor has gone bad, or is it a starting contactor gone bad? i would like to repair it because its been a terrific machine over the years.

any help is appreciated.

Could be the motor, also could be the blower wheel attached to the motor, it will set up a noise if it is rounding out.  Or something could be in the blower wheel.  When you say it does not start is it dead or does it try to start and stop when the the start switch is released.

it does not start when the start button is released. it does not even try to spin

Be sure you did not pop the breaker to the dryer.  Could be the motor went ka-poot, or the door swtch, start switch, thermo-fuse might have blown, timer, lots of things, will need to take it apart and see what part has failed.

When the blower got stripped out, this blew the thermal fuse, creating a secondary problem.  You need to replace the blower:
