1GB is OK, more is better...
if there's not enough "real" memory,
windows will use your hard drive.
Is your C drive full ?

1.Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4.On the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, click Change.
5.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
6.Under Paging file size for selected drive, click to Custom size check box. You can enter the amount of memory you would like to reserve for Virtual memory by entering the initial and maximum size.
7.Click Set
When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Special Note: You should choose the same amount for the initial size and maximum size. This will Stop your CPU from constantly changing the paging file.

But, I think your best shot at resolving all the issues you have is a reformat/reinstall of windows. It sounds like you've gotten some sort of malware/virus/trojan. While a reinstall isn't any picnic, you'll probably spend less time on that than chasing down and removing a virus.
Having said that, the one and only program I've ever had any real success with when it comes to trojans/malware is a program called malwarebytes, available for free at:
http://www.malwarebytes.org
Run a deep scan - the program runs pretty quickly and reports issues as it finds them. I like the program so much I run it routinely even if everything appears to be running normally.
Hope any of this helped...
