We are in a cabin in the woods with the above water heater.  Arrived to find we have no hot water.

Tried to re-light pilot and can't get pilot to keep lit....we are assuming it's that thermocople part, but want to find out....

as we are in a somewhat remote area with a couple of small town with small town parts stores around (no sears or lowes), will a universal part work on these?

Perfect!

Another beer on the way; it worked, we went to local hardware store and they had one left; 36 was a bit long but we just tucked it around and it's out of the way
