Old WD External HD

As of a few days ago, my old 40GB external stopped being read by any computer I plug it into. My work PC and home PC used to recognize it easily, and the drive would pop up in "my computer". Now, I can't get any computer to recognize it.
The hard drive lights up and "hums" but it's as if no computer recognizes it is there. I tried going to "Disk Management" to see if it just needed a drive letter reassignment, but it doesn't show up at all in disk management.
I even read a tip that putting it in the freezer for a while could help with data retrieval. Tried it...didn't work.
Good news is that MOST of what is on that drive I already have backed up. But there is a handful of things I downloaded onto it in the last few weeks that I would like to retrieve.
Any advice?

(8 years old... must be IDE),
you should have a better chance of "seeing" it.
The internal Computer Drives must be set to Master or Slave, ect ...

Anyway, it's an FAT drive
[If you could remove it from it's case and connect it internally to the inside Computer Cables]
Um...sure...easy peasy. Okay how do I do that?

FAT .. that's just the way it's formated .. (doesn't matter) .. some newer Drives use NTFS... Anyway, it's an FAT drive

it should be an IDE drive
If you have an IDE Drive Ribbon Cable in your Computer with an extra Connector, it would connect there (along with it's Power Connection )..
The jumpers on the existing Computer Drive and the "temporary" Drive may need setting.
Find a close PC "geek" that knows more about it if you need help
