Maytag Atlantis MAV9504EWW - Spin really noisy (suspect spin bearing)

I have a Maytag atlantis MAV9504EWW that makes a really loud roaring noise (sounds like a wrecked bearing) when it spins. All the research I've done points to the spin bearing having gotten wet and corroded. I took the drum assembly out and you can see some rust stains coming down from the drum above the transmission.

Makes sense that I'd have to change the relevant seals as well as the bearing. I went to the local Maytag dealer and he reckoned that I'd need about $200 worth of parts, and I'd need special tools because I'd have to take the brake assembly apart. Is this correct?

I ask because the brake seems to be on the opposite end of the transmission - surely I could replace the spin bearing without getting into that?

I'm having trouble working out which parts I actually need too. Please can someone offer some wisdom before I reduce a (somewhat) working washer into a pile of bits..

You have to tear the machine completely apart to install the bearing and seal, brakes transmission, tubs, everything. Some special tools are required and some can be by passed. Also, the bearing in the bottom of the transmission can make pretty much the same sound that you are hearing. You should get and parts until you can verify exactly where the noise is coming from. You can use a solid rod or sthethascope to pinpoint the location of the noise. I have a few detailed post on here somewhere pertaining to these repairs, but I can't link you to them at the moment.

I'm pretty convinced that it's the bearing at the top somewhere, since I can see the traces of rusty water up there. I'll try using my wife's stethoscope on it to check - do you do this while it's spinning (could be loud) or just spinning it over by hand?

So if it is the spin bearing then I actually have to take the brake apart and let that spring loose (kind of a bit worried about that bit) etc, or can that be left intact and just separated from the transmission, and that separated from the tub?

If all the tools etc come to too much I may just call it quits on the machine since it's second hand and doesn't owe me much. I got it for $60 because it was noisy on the spin cycle but still worked, but it now occasionally refuses to spin until you spin the drum a bit by hand then try again. It was only meant as a temporary measure until we had the money for a new one. Kind of goes against the grain to junk something that can be fixed though...

Having to "spin it by hand" I agree sounds like the spin bearing


Yes you have to remove the brake, but you can do it without the $100 tool. All you need is a couple #10-24 x 1 & 1/2" bolts. So yes, you will have just under $200 in the repair. If it were me, I would take that $200 and go buy a used Whirlpool or put a little more $ with it and buy a new one.

Thanks for the info, just wondering, is the triple lip seal in the kit you put the link to the only seal I need to replace to make sure that water doesn't get into the new bearing like it did the old one, or do I need another seal too?

Also, am I right that the spring removal tool is the one for removing the springs that hold the drum transmission etc down to the chassis of the machine. I've already established that I can get those undone and done up again with a screwdriver and a lot of swearing..

If I can find someone who can make a homemade version of the spanner wrench, then that should bring the cost down to about the $65 mark - am I correct..? It would be nice if that were possible, I take your point about just putting the money to a new washer, but we've just bought a house so I'd rather not be finding that kind of money right now if I can help it!

Once again, thanks for the help, it's great to be able to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into before I find out the hard way! :D

yep, the seal kit comes with everything you need. and yes the spring tool is for the suspension springs.
