My Kenmore front loader will not start the final high speed spin cycle. I assume it is because it also will not drain. I have checked the drain line and can hear the pump running, although the pump sound has changed. I will be replacing the pump tomorrow. Am I correct in assuming that the final spin cycle is inhibited by the fact that I still have water in the tub?

Yes, doesn't mean that there isn't some other problem as well, but a good place to start - if you open the unit up and check the pump manifold it may have some debris in it which is preventing it from draining - often just cleaning it out is all that's required
