When you compose a post, you're writing in what's called an editor window. The default editor is plain text, meaning what you see ain't what you're gonna get but you can monkey around with BBcode if you're into that sort of thing.
Many people like the WYSIWIG editor and Invision Board has one, they call it a Rich Text editor.
You can set your default editor in the My Settings section of your profile, just check the box for which editor you prefer.
