My wine cooler began to fluctuate in temperature and then no longer maintained it at all. Now it flashed HI! Is it likely to be the compressor? The fans appear to be working.

You say fans, plural, which implies that you checked the condenser fan down by the compressor. Is that correctillia?
Next things to check would be:
- layer of dog hair on the condenser grill
- compressor running or not or doing the hum-click cha-cha
- evaporator coil frost
Need the complete model number, including the three-digit prefix.
