Whirlpool model lec8858dq1
Started fine yesterday morning, although the timer hasn't worked to shut it off in quite some time, so we've been simply opening the door manually.
When I went to start it last night, it hummed like it wanted to start, then shut itself off and smelled like electric burning.
I admit I'm not a handy guy, but any insight you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like your motor has gone ka-poot or something has the motor jammed, see if you might have something in the blower wheel jamming the motor, if not, sounds like the motor is bad.

You are quite welcome, glad I could help. If this was stuff jamming the blower wheel itself you need to check the dryer vent in the home to see why this stuff is backing up into your dryer..;)

I am having the exact same problem. My blower housing was FILTHY! How do I see if something is blocking the motor? I couldn't believe how much stuff was in there. With five children, I need my dryer!!!

My model is Kenmore model 86873800. It hums like it wants to start but doesn't. Then it stops and I smell something burning. I took off the blower housing and cleaned it. It was awful. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like your motor has gone ka-poot. Can you turn the drum by hand counter-clockwise (to the left) ? If you can turn the drum nothing is jammed, and is probably the motor, if you cannot turn the drum either the motor bearings have seized up or something has the motor jammed.

After cleaning out the blower wheel and putting the darn thing back together, it turned on with no hesitation. Yeah! What causes the blower housing to get so dirty? Should it be cleaned on some sort of schedule? Thanks so much.

Dryers and blower wheels clog up for one reason only, THE DRYER VENT FROM THE DRYER TO THE OUTSIDE IS KINKED, BLOCKED OR CLOGGED..un-kink, un-block and clean your dryer vent from the dryer to the outside!!.

Back again. The darn thing quit again after drying two loads just fine. I just hums and won't turn on. I tried to turn the drum manually and it turns but is really difficult. How do I make sure nothing is blocking the motor? The load I was attempting to dry is jeans (heavy) and the two loads I did last night were lighter. Any correlation?
