Yes, it's a floating check valve, more or less.

I've read on other blogs about opening the white cap and cleaning out lint, pennies, etc. Where is it exactly?

Nope, no white cap on this machine - thats the Oasis with the cap. This machine has a sump chambe molded into the bottom of the tub and a check valve within the chambers, it can collect coins and lint etc and cause grief - best bet is to pull the drain hose fron it and reach through the hole with long pliers to remove crud. Pumps are known to block up and fail as well
