Yes it sounds as if the agitator insert has stripped splines and the agitator shaft is slipping inside it - you can pound the insert from the agitator as expected, sometimes not so easy to get the new one in. We used to use a length of threaded rod, a couple of nuts and some large washers as a makeshift puller and "press" the insert in
