The flapper door needs repair (probably spring or solenoid), but I do not know how to get access. The front panel is not a pull-off like on normal GE/hotpoint models. I can't figure out how to get it apart. Two images below of front of dispenser. Help! Thanks!

Looking at this breadown, it looks like you have to disassemble it from the inside of the door rather than the outside of the door.

thanks for those who gave the sears link ... the diagram for the GE seems to be the same (found on repalr clinic). But the parts diagram does not really contain the disassembly information. It sorts of looks like backside access, but thats so hard to believe (an unforgivable design flaw) that I really would like it confirmed by someone who actually serviced such a refrigerator.

from the 31-9117 service manual:
Controls
The electronic controls on the dispenser are interactive.
The control panel is equipped with a proximity sensor that causes the panel to light up
as you approach the dispenser (approx. 2 inches).
Removal
1. Remove the bezel from the outside of the freezer door.
Note: On stainless steel models, the front panel must be removed.
Remove screws from top, bottom, and hinge side.
Pull out on hinge side.
2. Remove the screw from the bottom of the control panel.
Lift up and pull the bottom of the panel out.
Disconnect the connectors, and remove the control panel.
3. Remove 4 screws and the backing panel.
4. From the back side of the panel, remove the water switch and the light socket.
5. Remove 3 screws and the duct door solenoid.
