I have now replaced that and cleaned all the associated surfaces but the $*#!% thing still leaks when I put it back together. A lot. Apparently from the same place. Is there anything else this could be?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

That would inducate leakage through the Tub Bearings (not good) - do-able, but not cheap - the machine is of a good design
