I think I've found where it is leaking, and by looking at some parts catalogs online, I think I've identified that part as the pump, seen here:

Strangely enough, it looks like the circle in the very center part has something partially protruding from it, and water is dripping from there.

I guess my questions are - is this fixable? Does the pump have to be replaced? Why would this happen? etc.

It happens when either something gets stuck in the pump while spinning at high speed and begins to melt the pump housing ... or if the motor gets too hot (unit overloaded or something wrapped around the agitator) and the shaft of the motor begins the heat up the pump actually melting it.

It is not a repairable part. Replaceable only.

It's actually the other side of the pump that looks like the shaft busted through and is leaking from... I plan on trying to replace the pump tomorrow. I'm assuming there's nothing special I need to know; it looks pretty simple so I'm going to just try it.

It's easy.

Pop off the two spring metal clips that hold the pump to the front of the motor.
Pull the pump off of the motor shaft.
Keep a towel and and bucket handy ...
Hold the pump with the hose clamps still attached over the towel/bucket
Release the hose clamps with plyers
Pull the hoses off (some water will come out - but not much if you have a hole in the pump as you describe.)

Reverse to reassemble = do some laundry now ... and have a brew.

Didn't see the link. Already changed the water pump yesterday, luckily it was simple as I expected and no asses were made of anyone.
