Win 7 virus alerts

Win 7 started nagging about viruses and Trojans. I run Norton on this laptop, which did need to be updated and did claim to resolve a couple of threats. Win 7 claims it fount 31 and that my computer is infected and unprotected.
It all seemed to start after downloading a pdf from a fileshare site.
Can't Win 7 tell that this machine is already running Norton? Is Microsoft just trying to sell something?

I think you're right. And 7zip certainly is. Don't download that from anybody anywhere, you might get malware that disables half your basic Windows applications, wipes out your toolbar and a few other nasties. I just went through that.
