More often than not, simply replacing the defrost thermistor is enuf to fix this issue...
If that doesn't do it, a motherboard is is in order.
I always try the thermistor first, as it is MUCH cheaper than the board...

See the white thermistor on the top of the coil? That's the one. Unplug unit and carefully cut old therm. Out of place
For your splice, I reccomend and use solder and shrink wrap, but silicon-filled, non-conductive ceramic wire nut will work also.
Reassemble and watch...if the iceberg continues...motherboard time.
