GE DNSR473EW0WW dryer won't shut-off & heats in "off" position

This is not scalding hot to the touch. It feels as if the dryer had been used and shut off about an hour ago, if that makes sense.
Any help on the would be greatly appreciated. I replaced the mount, bearings, and belt less than a year ago, so I'd love to be able to keep this going.
Thanks

First, I did not see any glowing. However, the top-center of the back wall in the drum (what the diffusion plate is centered in)was slowly getting hot. Again, not scalding to the touch, but significantly warm; what I'd imagine operating temperature to be.So, o glow, but there is heat with the door open/light off.
What I did not realize that the "timer" I was referring to is actually the Automatic Cotton setting, not the timer. So does that mean it is a moisture sensor of some sort? There is a timer setting on the dryer, but now that I think about it I've never used the function. My apologies for the misinformation.
Thoughts?

So, the question: When in "Automatic" mode should the dial advance from More Dry to Less Dry, or will it shut off when it senses it is finished.
Thanks for all the previous help!

In Automatic mode, the timer only advances when the heat is on. Gotta get eyeballs on the heating element again. It's possible that you installed it with a section that had excessive sag and contacted the heater housing and opened up again.
