Recently, the damper that rotates in front of the internal viewing light of my GE Advantium SCA2001BSS microwave/speed cooker has become stuck in a loop of opening and closing by itself. This is the shield that covers the light that comes on whenever the door is opened (NOT the cooking lamps).

I have tried cutting the power at the circuit breaker and leaving it off for hours...but once I flip the breaker back on it starts opening/closing by itself again.
It does stop rotating whenever I set a routine that requires a "TURN FOOD OVER" break in the middle of the countdown (i.e. bread stops at 1:30 to tell me to flip the slices...the damper stops rotating while the operation is paused but starts once I press continue).

Questions:

If I continue using it under microwave or halogen cooking, will this cause bigger problems?

Is there a way to reset the computer inside?

Honestly I can do without an internal light -- if the damper serves a valuable purpose, would it be okay if I made my own shield on the outside of the grate in the picture so that this section is always shielded? (essentially the same as making the current shield stay shut all the time) If so, what material should it be made of?
