My Maytag washer (M# A310) won't do anything but hum. The shafts for the motor and pump turn freely by hand as does the transmission.
Is the motor fried?

If you remove the belts and start the machine and the motor still does not engage you need a new motor.

I cleanded the timer contacts and pulled the belts. No joy. I guess it's scrap, I'm not going to spend $150+ on parts for a twenty five year old machine.

Anything you buy today isn't going to last you anywhere near 25 years. Industry average stats are that you'll be doing some type of repair on your new washer every 2 to 4 years and finally junking it after less than 10.
