Kenmore 110.97583820 gas dryer motor replacement issue

13 posts in this topic

Senseis & Gurus,

I am new here (although I may have participated here in a past life).

I have run into an issue with what should be a simple drop-in motor replacement in my Kenmore gas dryer (model 110.97583820).

The failed motor part is listed as 3395654 and the recommended repacement is 279787.

I checked out the wiring on the replacement motor and it looks to be exactly as on the old motor with the exception of a blue jumper wired in where the broken belt switch should be. That SHOULD BE an easy pull and reconnect.

The bigger problem is with the motor bearings' fit into the dryer's motor mount. The plastic (indicated with the back arrows of death ... what is the term for these plastic pieces?) on the new motor is different than on the old one. The old one had a smooth circular surface. The new one has several bumps and irregularities that appear to be designed to lock the bearings into the motor mount yoke.

I WAS able to make the motor fit into the mount by canting it over about 45 degrees from the orientation of the original motor mount. I'll tell you what, getting those mounting clips back on to the motor mount was no easy task because of the extra plastic.

In the new orientation, I can no longer hook up the leads to the broken belt switch.

1) Can I safely go without the broken belt indicator?

2) If not, what gauge wire should I use for the jumpers? [Here's hoping that Home Depot or Lowes will have what I need!]

3) Is this a common problem with 'updated' parts numbers?

Thanks, Senseis and Gurus, for your kind attention to the Def Egge's issue.

OK Thanks for the video links and topic editing.

I see the problem now. The motor sent was NOT model 279787 but model 279827. That why there are extra tabs and nothing that lines up along the motor mount. In addition, on closer inspection, the shaft is too long on both ends.

Back to the laundromat and another week of waiting for the proper part to arrive.

No ordered elsewhere.

Upon further review, I ordered the 279827 motor when I wanted the 279787 motor instead for the 110.97583820 dryer.

I am suffering from a serious case of the dumbass this month.

Thanks for the laugh. I actually pulled that off on a Taiwanese-American optometrist once. The look on her face was priceless. Obviously, she did not grow up watching Bugs Bunny cartoons. ;-)

This is a great place to get help. I'll be checking back on a more regular basis!
