This dishwasher is 10-15 years old, I think, so it may be time to say goodbye. But it was strange -- all of a sudden the other night it started making this loud cacophony that's a combination of buzzing/humming and clacking. The clacking part is irregular -- not like an object caught in the impeller, but more like electrical sparks. Anyway, it's coming from the motor area, and it sounds ghastly. Otherwise the unit seems to continue working.
Should I break out the tools or go shopping? Should I start a death pool?

Remove the toe kick panel.
Lie on the floor and observe the motor while the d/w is running.
Look for the unusual.
Then,
Remove the lower spray arm and the impeller cover and see whats broken.

Probably a tongue stud or something rattling around in the wash pump impeller. Get out your hand tools and have a look...

Correction to my original post: It's a KUDV24SEWH2 model.
About to go looking for how to crack open the impeller. BTW, looking underneath I don't see anything out of the ordinary. (Some mouse poop, which is totally ordinary.)

Alright friends. If you're following this, you can commiserate with me. Trying to unscrew the screw at the top of the impeller, it appears I've royally screwed things. (Is that thing reverse threaded?) Anyway, it won't come off and the impeller is starting to crumble.
I'm picturing Col. Potter taking out his pistol and firing a lone shot at a dead Jeep.

Not reverse threaded, make sure power is disconnected and carefully jam motor by wedging a short 1/4" socket extension in the end of the motor fan, by reaching under the dishwasher and inserting it in the end of the motor housing - then you can get some good tourque from above to unscrew the impeller - best order up a kit though
