Maytag MAH5500BWW accessing the door latch assembly to replace it

10 posts in this topic

I need to replace the door latch assembly but can't quite get to it. I have the door off and the front of the washer off. I can't figure out what bolts need to be removed to lift the top up. The bolts on this machine do not have screwdriver slots. RRRR. So I have to go find wrenches from my husband's pile of tools. RRRRR. I know that I may need to peel back the door boot. I think I have found instructions for the door boot. But I cannot find specific instructions for this model on lifting the top. Help please. This is my first ever look inside a washing machine and this one, I know, is a lemon. But I have three little kids and the laundry will drown me if I can't get the latch replaced! Thanks in advance for your help.

Open the DETERGENT DISPENSER cover

Remove 4 phillips screws and pull out dispenser plastic assy

Standing in front of the washer---look at the front of the TOP COVER

There are (2) 5/16" screws that secure the top cover---through "L" shaped iron brackets. Remove both screws and the brackets.

Lift top cover

There is a 5/16 bolt under the left and right side of the top cover that holds the lid on. Take note on how the brackets fit back on. You also have to remove the detergent dispenser from the top of the lid. You'll get to use your screwdriver for that one. Yeaaaaa! Whats the problem with your machine? You sure it's just the door latch?

Sorry John, posted at the same time.

Part link to the door latch assembly ==> Latch Assembly

Thanks for all the help, John, Santa, and Samurai!

Yes!! I had already removed the detergent dispenser to get at the emergency door release cord. Just now, found the two bolts and got them off (got to use the mini-ratchet set, fun) and the lid is up. So nice to not have to remove the door boot to get to the latch assembly.

The reason I am focusing on the latch is because of the do and FL codes that flashed as soon as the machine started last night. I loaded it as usual, closed the door, water started filling the machine and then it stopped. there were three buzzes and the codes do and FL came up. Unplugging the machine and restarting it made no difference. Started scrolling around on line and found that this series of events indicates a bad door latch.

Please note this is a MAH5500B machine. Not a MAH5500BWW machine. I am concerned about which latch assembly to buy. I thought I need part number 22004435, not part number 22003593 as you suggest, Grand Master. Please advise. They look exactly the same. The Maytag part number listed on the latch in the machine is Maytag Part# 62721080. Once I know which one to go with, I'll get it!

Any more insight and help you can provide is greatly appreciated. I am so excited to do this myself!

Hi Guys, Can you give me any more help? I will pay beer money! See my reply from this morning. I am all set to go once I confirm which part to order. The part you have suggested relates to the MAH5500BWW machine. I got the other part number from one of the other part supply search engines out there (can't remember which one right now because I bookmarked it on a different computer, sorry). Just want to confirm which one I should get.

Thanks so much, again!

P.S. The model was changed in my title. I don't have a ...WW machine. I am concerned, with all due respect, this could be a little misleading, Samurai. Maybe the machines are the same, but my research indicates that the top opens differently on the MAH5500B machine from the ....WW machine. Please enlighten me.

... the MAH5500B machine from the ....WW machine. Please enlighten me.

Please post a photo of the model number tag on the washing machine itself.

Ah, my apologies. I dragged the machine out, climbed on top of it, and looked in the back. The tag does say MAH5500BWW. So sorry.

Thank you for getting back to me.

So how'd you make out on this one, Annie?

Oh Samurai, it all worked out very well. I ordered the part you recommended from the sister site and it came in two days. It took minutes to replace. There was one hitch. One of the four (?) plugs was different from that on the original part. The new part came with two or three little separate plugs, if I remember correctly, while the original was just one plug for that particular junction. However, the two or three little plugs fit in to the receiving end that was attached to the machine and all the other plugs matched just fine. It has all been working perfectly from the moment I replaced it.

Thank you so much for your help!

Annie
