Our very old [1997?] Whirlpool LGC8858EQ1 dryer stinks.
By "stink" I mean it actually smells....I am thinking its because the belt has quit and the it just getting smoked by the motor/pulley rotation/friction?
When we turn on the dryer, it "sounds" like it wants to spin [and actually did at some point] , but it doesn't now. This lack of rotation is accompanied by a horrid smell....I think its the drive belt:

Remove the Belt and try turning the Drum by hand.
Try turning the Motor Shaft by hand.
Does it turn easily, smoothly ?

Does it turn easily, smoothly ?
Today, I removed the drum.....vacuumed out all the lint, paper clips, silly bandz, etc that was in the housings/frame...and found $4.72 in assorted change.
I tried to rotate the motor..it rotated freely BUT emitted a squeak.
I put it all back together again, rotated it by hand...movement seemed "ok".
I plugged it it [gas connection NOT made up; venting NOT made up] and gave it a spin.
It spins, but that squeak I heard in the manual test is back.
What this tells me it is not the belt [although it still *could* be at fault, just not primary failure], but rather the motor...possible the bearings?
If i had to pinpoint the location of the squeak, I'd say it came from the back of the motor assembly
What say you?

Does the wheel on the tension roller move easily?
It does move easily....not as easily as say a roulette wheel, but easy.
When I removed the drum, that piece was laying on the frame floor - not attached to anything.....after watching that movie, I figured nothing was busted....I was kinda brutal removing the drum ~ didn't really know how it came out.
One of the "fins" in the drum [that help move the clothes along] was black..the other 2 were white.
As long as I had the drum off...I removed the darkened fin.
The cause of discoloration was 0.93¢. ....a nickel was just about worn smooth.
If you're gonna be in there changing that failed motor, go in armed with this
I had considered that kit.
The belt is from 1997 ...how much longer do you think it has left...a day... a week...a decade?
Anyone's guess really.
Cheap insurance I think.
