The condenser is a heat exchanger where the refrigeration system gets rid of all the heat that's been removed from the compartments and the heat generated by the compressor itself. It's called a condenser because the refrigerant enters as a vapor but, as it cools, it condenses to a liquid. A dirty condenser will make ANY refrigerator warm up-- this is not unique to Sub-Zeros.
BTW, the condenser on the Sub-Zero 550 is up on top, behind the front grill. On most other refrigerators, the condenser is located at the very bottom of the refrigerator, either in back with the compressor or in front behind the plastic toe grill.
