My Miele Solaris vac died on me today and it could be the cordreel assembly, a power switch, or the motor itself. I've done a motor re-install before but it was dead and therefore a straight up replacement. Id like to test the vac with my Flukemeter to see what's up.

Anyone good with vacuum repair and voltage meters? I never quite know how to set up the Fluke to measure. Just don't use it enough.

I don't want to just start replacing stuff on a $800 vacuum. The cordreel died on another Miele S3 we have, and the motor was in my parents' S3.

depends on the model fluke, but make sure you have the right terminals hooked up (common and voltage AC, not Current), and switch the dial to the V~ symbol, start probing it. Most modern flukes are auto-ranging, so no need to worry about that

Thanks for this reply as I mothballed the project and I've been using another vacuum cleaner for a while. Apparently the Miele cord reels go bad a lot - I don't see how that could be a problem unless the cord itself wore through or disconnected somehow from the voltage terminals somewhere on the reel mechanism? I would think maybe there's a way to fix these. Refurb reel unit is 150 bucks. The issue can be spotted as you move the cord in and out of the vacuum with the reel; it shuts power off and then comes back on, making me think that it's just a bad connection somewhere internal to the reel.
