In this appliance repair safari, Samurai Appliance Repair Man shows you how to troubleshoot the Whirlpool-built modular ice makers with optical controls. The ice makers that use the optical controls are just like any of the other Whirlpool modular ice makers that use a metal feeler arm. All the optics controls do is replace that feeler arm and tells the ice maker when to stop making ice.
Here's the ice maker kit I installed to repair this problem ==> http://www.repaircli...857?RCAID=24038
In case the optics do turn out to be bad (less common), here are the replacement optics control boards ==> http://www.repaircli...526?RCAID=24038
Question from a YouTube viewer:
Q: A question regarding the reset and manual harvest...
Ok Power off, jumper T and H, Plug back in, wait 15 sec, and then close the flapper door. Is it necessary to also close the door light switch?
Bob at Coastal Appliances
A: Excellent question!
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Let's look at the Official Test Procedure from Whirlpool Service Update, 8178023 ==> http://goo.gl/8k3FJ
Go to the last page. Step 6 says, "Open the freezer door and observe the ice maker. A harvest should be in progress. NOTE: If the ice maker will not operate, refer to the 'Important Note' above the chart."
Since the door can be opened to observe the ice maker cycle in progress, the light switch must not have any effect on the ice maker cycling.
