Whirlpool window AC/heat unit ACE184xpo

I have a Whirlpool window AC/heat unit, model ACE184XPO. The unit is cooling too much! It is not cycling off. Suspect maybe the thermostat, but not sure. Once last winter, heat did not shut off, room was so hot everything in it was warm to the touch!! Nobody is servicing window units in this area anymore, is this something I can repair myself?

Almost certainly a sticking thermostat, very common. ==> http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Temperature-Control-Thermostat/1185753/919796?modelNumber=ACE184XP0

Can verify by seeing if the contacts are closed at when you stick the bulb in the freezer (should read open).

For that unit, the guts should slide right out of the metal cabinet. Remove the plastic grill - you may have to refer to your installation manual to find out how to do this without breaking it. The thermostat bulb will be dangling right in front of the evaporator. Trace the copper line from the bulb back to the thermostat. Slide the thing out if you have to, it's no big deal.
