Noisy Kenmore 417.83142201 (Frigidaire) Dryer

5 posts in this topic

Hi -

I've got a Kenmore dryer that makes a loud vibrating noise starting about 1 minute into a heat cycle. When the dryer is cold, and running without the heating element on, it sounds normal.

I've replaced the rear bearing. It was worn, but replacing it did not solve the problem. The belt, glides and felts were replaced about two years ago and are still in good shape. I've also cleaned-up and checked the idler and motor.

I'm sort of left with the blower wheel. There are no broken bits and there doesn't seem to be excessive play anywhere. Is there anything else I can check to be sure before spending $60 plus shipping on a new blower assembly ?

BTW, did the moisture sensor on this model ever work ? I've never seen it make a difference on this particular machine.

Thanks,

Gary

I've had this happen before and it's usually a hairline crack in the blower housing or blower wheel. You may not be able to see it until you remove both the blower wheel and the housing from the dryer. In this case it is only available as a complete assembly.

You're right on, Scott. Common problem with the Bosch dryers, too. The fact that the noise only occurs in a heated cycle is the clue. The hot air expands the plastic blower material and makes the noise.

It was the fan. Couldn't see anything until I pulled the fan assembly out, but there were a couple hairline cracks radiating from the fan hub.

Thanks for the help.
