You can somewhat "renew" individual NiCad cells that are "shorted")
(reads 0 volts and won't take a charge)
It involves using a high(er) voltage spike to "remove" the crystalline short in the bad cells.
No need to disassemble battery..
It works for a while, but the cell goes bad again soon.
