We've had this dishwasher for almost 7 years now and the performance has gradually degraded, with a dramatic increase in gross food particles on dishes/very hard to remove white residue, etc. in the last year or so. At first I chalked it up to our somewhat hard water + non-phosphate detergent but it seems to be getting even worse, even though we now always use the cookware cycle. It seems to run fine, no standing water, no backing up, no weird sounds but the dishes just aren't clean. We've always used Cascade powder, FWIW. We started using JetDry in the last couple years, which helps a bit but not enough.

Not sure - there definitely seems to be a lot of water if I open it during the cycle but I've never checked that in particular. Should I just open it partway through the cycle to check?

Need to remove the lower spray arm and nut holding fine mesh filter asm. Distend the upper spray tube from its port and the remove the intake cover.
the next piece under that is the main wash pump intake screen, to remove, stick yer finger down one side, yer thumb down the other, and pinch the long sides together to release and pull up.
i'm sure you'll be amazed at how much crap is clogging this intake screen...
reassemble, run a couple white vinegar cycles and switch to Finish tabs...

I couldn't figure out how to actually remove the upper spray tube, but I managed to unclip it from the back and push it over enough to get the screen thing off. The screen had a fair amount of gunk on it, and the drain was filled with water, so I dried it out with wads of paper towels, pulling up lots of little black crumbly bits and also a thin round of plastic that seemed to about the perfect size to block the hole in the bottom, so hopefully that did the trick! I just ran a rinse only cycle and no water in the bottom.

For the vinegar, should I just dump a bunch in the bottom of dishwasher and start the cycle? Should I make cleaning the drain & cover a regular chore or just wait until the performance slips again?
