An Oldie but a goodie !

Was almost a crime to take money for the amount of effort required to change the belts too.

I too love those Maytags. We have 37 of these at my Dad's two laundromats. Albeit the newer Transition and electronic controls. The Samurai makes a great point about the belts on these units that need to slip. A couples of years ago we got some belts from our supplier that were made in Mexico and not OEM. I did not think anything of it and installed them on a few machines. All of the machines that had these generic belts on them would kick off on the motor thermal overload. It took me a little while to figure out was going on: the generic belts had more "grip" and would not slip like the originals were designed to do, causing the motors to overheat. I put the original belts back on those machines and the problem was solved.

I've seen the belt burn up when the tub seal and bearing have gone bad also.

I can't believe Maytag tried to phase these machines out and try to push the Atlantis , Performa and "Legacy" (SAV) Searcy built washer.
