Hot water heater forum?

I have a Security 5 electric water heater that no longer produces hot water. Closer inspection revealed a tripped circuit breaker. I noticed a trickle of water comming from underneath the upper heating element electrical cover.
I took the electrical service cover off, and beneath I found clear evidence of electrical arcing. A fair amount of water also drained out of the area.
What repair is required? Do I need a new heating element? Do I need a new seal between the heating element and the tank? Do I simply need a new hot water heater?

A water filter guy told me I could remove the sacrificial anode (which is aluminum) and that would stop the smell. My question is, how much will this shorten the life of the tank and is it otherwise a bad idea? This is an 80 gallon, electric hot water heater that is only 6 months old. Is there anything else I can do short of a whole house filter?
Thank you in advance for your help, master and please put up a water heater forum for us if it is to your liking.
