The ignitor sometimes gets very bright and the gas lights, but most of the time the ignitor doesn't get vey bright and then goes off after a few seconds and the gas doesn't ignite.

Looking at the glow intensity of the ignitor is not diagnostically useful.  However, looking at the glow sequence in combination with other sounds often is.  

 

A common problem in gas dryers is the glow ignitor gets hot and turns orange, you hear a click, but no flame and then the ignitor goes out. This is almost always the gas valve coils, an inexpensive part that’s easy to change.  Don't bother ohming them out because they don't usually show up as open yet they're still bad.  And don’t mess around with just changing one of them, save yourself a headache and change out the set.  ==> http://www.repaircli...5303931775/3449
