To the Dojo,

 

I went out on this dryer Saturday--"no heat." Get to the dryer and hear no double-clacking after the ignitor begins to glow; replace the valve coil solenoids, easy-peasy. After reassembling the dryer, I ran it for my normal three-cycle check routine...except the dryer wouldn't reignite any gas after its first heating cycle. Pulled the cover and watched it cycle flawlessly, and then ran the dryer disconnected from the exhaust pipe; no problems. Left that with the customer. Customer calls back today, complaining AGAIN of "no heat" Rechecked my airflow system, and that the vent isn't connected to the outside. I couldn't make it "no heat." This product has new solenoids and igniter. Am I missing something?

As far as I've experienced; the customers says "sometimes will heat, sometimes not."

Dryer Vent
Vent should be rigid metal.
Short lengths of flexible metal may be OK, if not crimped when moving the Dryer into place.
NO plastic
NO PVC
NO screws
Foil Duct Tape is OK.
With an empty load, Timed Dry, High Heat, the vent temperature should cycle somewhere between 135F and 160F
Check / clean the Dryer Vent
Disconnect the Dryer Vent and check for good air-flow there and where it exits the house.
Check the Vent air temperature at the back of the Dryer.

Thanks for the reminders, Reg; I get all those correct indicators when I check the dryer DISCONNECTED. I guess I'm just frustrated with the call, having to bridge both technology and language gaps with this customer.

Ty: Does this dryer have a thermistor or a snap action tstat?

How responsive is the radiant sensor?

After using a vent-inside-the-house kit, the dryer works fine. My hypothesis is this hotel laundry room, high on a treeless hill, got enough gusting in the unhooded dryer vent to impact the drying of this dryer; venting it inside removed the outside wind variable = dry towels and bed linen.

And more to the point, it's just not safe to do so!!!

Please help, then. The venting to the outside is the problem; what would you guys do in this case?

clean the Vent

OR re-rout the Vent / shorter run

OR move the Dryer to an outside wall, shorter Vent run

check timer for loose contact, disconnect & pull out & shake it. if you hear something loose inside bad timer.  It will work o.k. until it gets loose again.

You can also check wiring diagram & put a jumper on timer between L1 & heat wiring.  (this will give you heat all the time  NO COOL DOWN)

Strictly for test purposes.  Leave it & see if customer has problem.

CHARGE A LARGE FEE TO CUSTOMER, SO THEY WILL BE INCLINED TO CALL YOU BACK TO PERFORM CORRECT REPAIR.

Had a doctor customer that was too busy to call me back, went on for a year until coil kit went out.

Many times, retrofitting a proper vent is a small construction project (sheet rock removal and replacement, etc.) and well outside the scope of most appliance techs who focus on troubleshooting and repair.  In these cases, I refer them to a small-jobs oriented builder here in town who has done excellent work for us.  In turn , he refers appliance repair jobs to me.  Your best bet is to establish a similar referral relationship in your area.

I would recomend against leaving a jumper wire on a timer for anything so that the heat was on constant, Insurance is good but I don't wanna find out!
