I have a ge profile that was having problems keeping the tempurature down.  The condensor fan was running very slowly and the compressor would not start.  Through some reasearch on past posts I narrowed the compressor problem down to a bad starter relay.  I got good voltage readings at the j2 plug on the motherboard and assumed the condesor fan motor was bad as well.  I went to a local parts store which had the relay in stock and ordered the fan motor.  When I replaced the starter the condesor fired up and I used a small desk fan to cool the coils.  The unit is working like a charm now, except...

 

The new fan motor has been installed and it still runs very slowly.  I am getting 13.6v at j5 to j8 with the plug off and 13.6v at the fan motor connector with the fan attached and running.

 

Am I wrong in assuming the board is good?

 

How fast do these fans spin, it is spinning so slowly that I can count the rpm? 

 

What are the odds the replacement unit is bad?

 

Any advise would be appreciated..

Condenser Fan is single speed

J2-3 white common

J2-5 yellow 12v = Fan ON

J2-8 12v DC supply voltage

 

measure

J2-5 to J2-3 = 12v DC

J2-8 to J2-3 = 12v DC

j2 8 to 3 . 13.5v

 

Bad motherboard?

 

I checked the recall notice but mine is 2 months too late.

If there is a GE on the front of the refrig it's the motherboard.

 

I go through 7 to 10 a week.

I'm not sure if it covers MotherBoards caused by a bad Condenser Fan

Good catch Sensei Reg! I thought he meant getting 13v at both pin 5 and pin 8. Not that he was measuring 5 to 8. I was trying to figure out what on earth could cause the problem. Kept coming up with "does not compute. " Anyhow yep, time for a new board.

just a side note.  The unit is cooling very well while pulled away from the wall even with the slow moving fan.

bad MotherBoards in that model were

May 05 - Jul 06

 

Your model should have the "newer" MotherBoard, but seems to be bad

You may be able to see a burned resistor on the board ...

Unless you can positively prove that the condenser fan is good, replace BOTH the muthaboard and the condenser fan or you risk doing this again in just short time.

I just installed the new condesor fan this morning.  That's what had me confused.  I'll try a new mother board and follow up.

 

How can I confirm the replacement fan is good?

If the fan is getting a valid power supply and it ain't running, it's bad!

If the windings on the fan motor read open, it's bad!

If the fan won't run when you hot wire a 9v battery to it, it's bad!

New motherboard installed and fan is working correctly. 

 

Next I'll try to get the icemaker that has broken twice working.
