I've had a rash of calls for top freezers that appear not to work in peoples garage refrigerators.  Is there any links to good articles that I can forward these people that explain how refrigerators don't funtion that well in cold temps? Thanks in advance.

... I've had a rash of calls for top freezers that appear not to work in peoples garage refrigerators.

how are these "appear not to work"

with those temperatures, the Freezer and the Fridge Cold Controls wouldn't need to run,

and may eventually get to -15 (are we talking Fahrenheit ?)

Most Compressors won't start at those low temperatures.. (stiff oil)

Minimum ambient temperatures mentioned in each Fridge User's Guide

Most Fridges' Cold Control monitors the Freezer temperature,

and the Fridge is controlled by a mechanical thermal Damper door.

Some Fridges Controls the Fridge temperature, while the Freezer temperature has the Damper Door.

(which control "clicks" when turned down all the way ?)

Some high-end Fridges have a Compressor for Fridge and one for Freezer,

but I wouldn't pay that much for my garage.

Why send someone else's article. Use the folllowing info to learn about the issue and then create your own article. A great way to show off your expertise as well as sell fridge garage kits.

Along with Sensei Reg's info, here is a thread that gives some info that may be helpful.. http://appliantology... +temp +control

garage "kit" contains a small "heater" to install near the Fridge Cold Control

What will they be storing in this Fridge ?

That model has the (Compressor) Control inside the Fridge section.

When the Garage gets down to about 30F, the Compressor won't be told to turn ON, and thus, won't cool the Freezer anymore ...

from the Frigidaire Use & Care Guide

CAUTION
Do Not install the refrigerator where the temperature will drop below 55°F or rise above 110°F.

The compressor will not be able to maintain proper temperatures inside the refrigerator.

Frigidaire does sell a garage heater kit, but all it is is a small aluminum foil heater that goes in the cold control in the fresh food section to turn the unit on sooner.  I tell people time and time again until I'm blue in the face, garage refrigerators are only good for storing beverages in the winter time, that's it.  Some manufacturers will even void the sealed system warranty if the refrigeratior is kept in a room where the temps fall below 50 degrees F.

yes, my mistake ... edited... thanks

Garage refrigerator heater kit.
This kit is designed for Frigidaire top freezer refrigerators placed in garages or basements
where the temperature drops as low as +34 F
*Note: Refrigerator MUST have been built in or after 2001 for the kit to work.

Thanks for this info, read some of the articles listed last week.  But today was a good one.  I went out to a home and found that the customer was saving on gas cost by not running his furnace much.  It was cold enough in the house to keep the refrigerator from cycling on.  This was some good information to have.
