Hotpoint Refrigerator Freezing Food Freezer at -20

Freezer on top. The freezer is running at -10 to -30 below and the refrigerator is freezing the food.  Turned the control from 7 to 5 temp climbed to 30 in the freezer then bumped back up to 6 then goes back to -30.  I'm thinking I need to replace the temperature control thermostat or do you think it may be the defrost timer?
