GE PFS22sbsbss not cooling

I am new to this site and in need of help.  Thanks in advance for advice and sharing of your knowledge. 

 

I have a GE pfs22sbsbss refrigerator that is barely cooling. Serial number is LM056870. The temps in the display are 40 for the freezer and 46 for the refrigerator. I checked these with a thermometer and the display is accurate. After slowly rising to these temps, they seem to have stabilized.   A fan is circulating air inside the refrigerator. The compressor is running (it vibrates and is quite warm to the touch). The evaporator fan is not running but will "try" to run if it is given a push......maybe 1 or 2 revolutions (slowly). I aimed a small fan at the evaporator coil and it cooled both the compressor and evaporator coil, but after two hours, the temps did not change from 40 and 46.  Does this rule out the evaporator fan as the culprit?  Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) model / serial not on the service bulletin / recall list

2) that would be the air from the Freezer Evaporator Fan ?

3) may be a bad Freezer Evaporator Fan or a bad MotherBoard

may need to measure Evaporator Fan Motor voltages (while connected)

Red to White = 12v DC

Yellow to White at least 8v DC

being and apprentice is not so easy.......

 

My old meter died sometime in the last year or two from a leaky battery....had to get a new one.  Next, I tried to remove the fan, but could not get it out so was not able to get any readings.  Is it possible to measure this on the motherboard or perhaps in a way that does not require removal of the fan.

Sounds like you have your fans mixed up

 

the Evaporator is the coil that gets cold in the freezer , so the evaporator fan is on top of it , in the freezer

 

the Condenser is the coil next to the compressor , so the condenser fan is that fan , next to the compressor

 

 

so what fan are you having problems with ?

Oooops.  I do have them backwards.  The fan that is just barely (sometimes) rotating is next to the compressor so I should have said "condenser fan" in my original post.

my mistake...

there seems to be (3) Fans in that model

 

J2 pin 1 to pin 3 = 6.3 v DC Evaporator Fan Tachometer
J2 pin 2 to pin 3 = 12 v DC Fan input
J2 pin 3 to pin 8 = 12 v DC
J2 pin 4 to pin 3 = 12.4 v DC Evaporator Fan (high speed),  8 v DC (low speed)
J2 pin 5 to pin 3 = 13.4 VDC Condenser Fan (single speed)
J2 pin 6 to pin 3 = 0 VDC Fresh Food Fan (high speed), 3 VDC (low speed)
J2 pin 8 to pin 6 = 13.4 VDC (high speed), 9 VDC (low speed)

For a lazy condenser or evaporator fan on all muthaboard units (LG, Samsung, GE, doesn't matter-- they all work and fail the same way) replace BOTH the fan and the muthaboard UNLESS you know for a measurable fact that only one of the components (fan motor or muthaboard) are bad.  Such knowing could include (but is not limited to): hooking a 9 volt battery up to the motor and it doesn't run; bad DC supply voltage from the muthaboard (don't bother trying to measure the pulse with-modulated voltage because it will be meaningless on a regular meter-- you need a scope to look at the pulse width pattern).  If in doubt, replace BOTH.  Don't over-think this.  If you replace a muthaboard and the fan was really the problem, the bad fan will take out the new muthaboard.  Yea verily, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
