GE Dual Wave III - Caught on Fire

30 posts in this topic

I do not have an inverter M/W, but several people I know have them and they report very happy with them - I have only ever looked at a few of them technically, but only a serious issue with one. Others I know who service them tell me that often the Magnetron and Inverter board need changing. The one I looked at required that but the owners purchased another one that was the same. Just over a year now and they quite pleased with the new one. The Inverter units are definitely lighter and have more functional oven cavity space as the Inverter takes up much less space than the traditional Transformer/Capacitor etc.  Microwave pricing has dropped so much that most major repairs become uneconomical akin to Refrigerator System repairs.

Inverter  microwaves cook great too , much better power control than the cycle time power control of old

an inverter micro should give you 3-5 years of trouble free service , when it does give trouble expect to replace it

If i was not attached to my vintage stuff i would have an inverter micro myself

Thanks for your response Cactus Bob.

That confirms what Budget Appliance was saying, and sure gives me more understanding.

Again, thanks everyone for helping me learn.

3-5 years?  That seems like a pretty lousy outlook for replacing a 20-year-old microwave.  Where are the workhorses that simply go, kind of like a basic cold-warm-hot clothes washer?

I think those have all been gone a decade if not 2.
